(1 reviews)Sari Galin
This cut has become the most enjoyable track in my world music library. Though I do not understand the language (except that Sari Galin means “Yellow Bride”), the piece is romantic but mournful. The audio recording of this live performance is impeccable, as if you were there.
The preceding track, Armenian Romances, flows seamlessly (without audience applause) into Sari Galin. As beautiful and evocative as that duduk solo is, the real treat begins when voices and the shurangiz are added to the mix. The same short melody line is repeated over and over throughout the piece except for a brief change within the latter half. But rather than becoming repetitious, each stanza has a new blend of voices, male with female, young with old, sometimes accompanied by Alizadeh’s shurangiz (including some low bass notes I don’t think I’ve ever heard before!), sometimes by Gasparyan’s duduk, woven so intimately and beautifully that you wish the more than 7-minute piece would never end.
